Core prompt: Whether you're preparing for Halloween or trying to fill your child's dress-up bin, consider sewing your own child's wig

Whether you're preparing for Halloween or trying to fill your child's dress-up bin, consider sewing your own child's wig out of yarn. Versatile and durable, this wig requires only cheap and basic materials, although it is preferable that you know how to operate a sewing machine in order to help the wig stay together as long as possible. Let your child be creative as to the color of the wig; she may want bright red or yellow, or she may go for multicolored pigtails instead.

How to Make a Childs Wig Out of Yarn

Instructions
1
Wrap the ball of yarn around and around the pillow. For a longer wig, wrap it around the longer side of the pillow. For a shorter wig, wrap it around the shorter side of the pillow.

2
Cut through the pieces of yarn in a straight line at one side of the pillow.

3
Cut out a 4-inch by 5-inch piece of felt. Place the yarn over it, centered over the middle of the felt.

4
Sew a seam down the middle of the felt, securing the yarn to it. This should form the "part" of the hair.

5
Place the felt on the child's head and make pigtails out of the two sides. Secure the pigtails with ribbons and trim the bottoms of them to make them even.

6
Cut away the excess felt.

You can add bangs to the wig by sewing 50, 4-inch pieces of yarn to the front end of the felt.

To make a straight wig, skip Step 5 and save about 50 of the long pieces of yarn for the bag of the wig. Then fold the saved strands in half and sew them along the back edge of the wig.

Children should be supervised carefully near a sewing machine.
